I just started learning Navajo on Duolingo and am excited to learn more. Are there any good books or podcasts or other places to learn about Navajo history, language and culture that are appropriate for a non-native learner?

2021.12.06 12:40 calcifur667 Moral failings are not the root of our problems

Group therapy was more of the same. A copy of the 12 steps hung on the wall. Step one read: “We admitted we were powerless over our addiction and that our lives had become unmanageable.” Step three that we “turn our life and our will over to the care of God, as we understood God”. Step four that we make a “searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves”. And step five that we admit “to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs”. So it went on. This didn’t feel right. I’d spent a lifetime cultivating self-acceptance. Now I was being told that the root of my problems was my own moral failings. And my only salvation from this life-threatening situation was to establish a relationship with God.
The Voluntary 12-step programme we run is open to people of all faiths and none … We fully respect a diversity of religious adherence.”)
I'll let that soak for awhile.. You got it? Good.
This passage is from an interesting article that chronicles one man's struggles with addiction and his subsequent stint in a 12 step based rehab.
While the article brings up many good points, these two in particular, were of great interest to me. I am a 34 year old male and am in recovery myself. Having spent all of my 20s homeless, in rehabs, or in jail, I have heard more times than I care to remember that the 12 steps are the only path to sobriety and some form of a functioning life. We hear all the time now from doctors and psychiatrists that addiction is a disease and not entirely in our control. That people need to drop the stigmas that keep so many of us from seeking treatment. Yet baked into the very core principles of AA is religious adherence in some form or another. I'd also like to point out that while AA maintains that it fully supports religious freedom, I can tell you from personal experience that if you read between the lines, what it really means is Christianity. And what, ladies and gentlemen does Christianity preach to us? Why, that we are all inherently sinners. That almost every action in our lives that is enjoyable is a sin. Even if you were to find a more relaxed group, religion wise, it still doesn't change the fact that almost every religion has the same basic premise. We are morally corrupt.
Now, before you hard core AA types get out your torches and hanging ropes, I want to say that if AA works for you that's great. Anything that can bring us miserable souls back from the brink is a miracle in itself. But for me at least, AA didn't work.
Out there, I was as bad as you can get. Heroin and alcohol nearly killed me more times than I can remember. Seizures and hallucinations brought on by alcohol withdrawal to pancreatiitus and hep c. My addictions took me to some very dark places. Ultimately, I was able to achieve sobriety and am going on almost 6 years clean. It's a harrowing tale of debauchery that I don't have time to share here but I was able to get clean without AA. Nowadays I have no doubt that it can be done without the shackles of religion or the belief that you are morally a failure. Certainly, for some, AA might be necessary but I think it's high time we took a look at the archaic formula that is the 12 steps..

2021.12.06 12:40 YappyMcYapperson "The Endless Glove"

Item Description: "Inevitability"
Inspiration: https://www.reddit.com/bindingofisaac/comments/r9bvf6/comment/hne7hwm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 I was essentially just brainstorming but was convinced to elaborate on the idea in an individual post more.
So yeah it's basically a parody of the Infinity Gauntlet from the marvel Universe.
The idea is that it's a one-time use Active Item that removes half the population of enemies in every room for the rest of the run. (There could be piles of ash in-place of where some enemies normally spawn).
If there's an odd number of enemies in the room, maybe there could be a 50/50 chance of one more enemies to suddenly turn to dust.
It would also be useful for large rooms and Double Trouble Boss rooms or Bosses that consist of two separate entities The Horny Boys would remove Loki, leaving you to fight Hornfel alone.
And it's should look like an obviously parody of the Infinity Gauntlet
And it should be a very rare item as well

2021.12.06 12:40 16coder I wrote a terminal program for doing interactive search/replace

Check it out here: https://github.com/typon/tabdeeli
If you use an IDE, this is probably useless for you. But if you like working on the terminal, or maybe ssh'ing into some machine to do edit files, you might find this program useful.
One thing I don't like about the vim search/replace experience is that there's no way to undo your changes, and if I'm quickly going over and accepting changes I sometimes make mistakes and I have to undo everything or else I am paranoid I missed something. This is why I added the History feature.
It only works on Linux for now...haven't had the chance to get it working on Windows or Mac. Feedback is highly appreciated :)

2021.12.06 12:40 nomoresafesearch91 (Request) Anyone have tips for a desk holster/saddlebag type thing so there’s a pencil, pen, and highlighter on each desk?

Title 1 high school history teacher. I’m in my 6th year here and before the pandemic had a variety of strategies for letting kids borrow something to write with without creating a culture of expecting all materials to be provided.
I’m trying to pick my battles in this shit-show of a year and instead of having the communal pencil bin that just leads to kids taking a pencil every day, I’d like to just have a pouch or something hanging on the side of every desk so kids don’t need to get up for writing implements or highlighters but also can be expected to just put them back before getting up to leave.
Any suggestions for products that you use for this purpose or ways you’ve MacGyvered something similar are welcome!

2021.12.06 12:40 Sherlockanubis Sample Profile Reviews

Hello Reddit Tinder brain trust.

I am a 31 year old straight male that has decided to jump into OLD for the first time. (I was in a long term committed relationship for the last 9 years and WOW has the landscape changed.)
I am looking to work on myself for a bit and do some personal growth. However I do want to date casually and have an activity partner for activities in and out of the bedroom. ;)

Below are 2 sample profiles that I am thinking of and would like some advice. I am in to process of taking photos and will use photofeeler and others to figure out the best ones.
#1: Hey thanks for swiping by. Not looking for a long term relationship right now but I am looking for an activity partner for the great PNW in and out of the bedroom. I hate doing things alone especially the bedroom stuff lol. I am a un-certifed at home sommelier and 5 star chef (Ask my cat he will back me up)
A great night out for me can look like everything from a sunset hike and watching the stars at lake serene or a burlesque show or opera and a nice dinner in downtown Seattle. We could also just thrift shop and bring a stick of chalk and do random pickup games of hopscotch on the sidewalk. A night in watching Bosch, The Expanse or MST3k with my cat with or without a shared meal... (This could also be popcorn ;D) We could also get together and do one of those Hunt a Killer games over some drinks.
Oh and I also have the best dad jokes... Just ask.
#2:Hey thanks for swiping by. Looking for an activity partner in and outside the bedroom. I love to cook shared meals, hike from lake serene to Rainer and everywhere in between. I know the best brunch and Ramen joints in Capitol Hill (Lost Lake and Ramen Danbo fight me! lol) Lets grab a drink hit the slopes at Stevens or find some cool thrift, vintage shops and food trucks and then go back to my place and i will introduce you to my cat in your arms and you can introduce me to your pussy in my face... Respectfully.

Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks again.
